Flip flops

Collected flip flops are reused, upcycled, or recycled as appropriate. 

We will not accept other footwear like unwanted sneakers, ballet flats, heels, dress shoes, in-line skates or ski boots.

Markers

Collected markers are mechanically and/or manually separated into metals, fibers, and plastics to be recycled.

We will not accept paint brushes, colored pencils, or wooden pencils.

Mascara wands

Old mascara wands are used by Appalachian Wildlife Refuge to remove fly eggs and larva from the fur and feathers of wild animals. 

We will not accept dirty mascara wands or mascara tubes. Please wash wands with warm, soapy water to remove residual mascara. 

Plastic bags

Plastic bags are mechanically and/or manually separated into various forms of plastic. The separated plastics are recycled into new plastic products.

We will not accept plastic food storage containers or plastic storage totes and containers.

  • Lithium (cameras, cell phones, computers, calculators, pacemakers)
  • Carbon-zink (household uses)
  • Mercury (hearing aids, cameras)
  • Nickel-cadmium or Ni-Cad (kitchen appliances, power tools, lighting, computers)
  • Silver oxide (hearing aids, watches, cameras, calculators)
  • Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH)
  • Zinc

Rechargeable batteries

  • Nickel-cadmium (Ni-Cad)
  • Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH)
  • Lithium-ion (li-ion)
  • Small rechargeable lead batteries under two pounds

We will not accept vehicle or marine batteries.
