Council approves contract to pave, reconstruct Beardslee Boulevard

At tonight’s regular City Council meeting, the Bothell City Council approved a construction contract with Watson Asphalt Paving Co., Inc., to pave and rebuild sections of Beardslee Boulevard. The $1,082,000 bid was about $388,000 less than the engineer’s estimate.

Construction is anticipated to begin later this month and be completed, weather permitting, by the end of September. Construction hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Drivers can anticipate the following traffic impacts:

  • Beardslee Boulevard will be limited to one way, eastbound traffic from about the Downtown Fire Station to 110th Avenue NE (the northern entrance to the University of Washington Bothell and Cascadia College).
  • Westbound traffic will be detoured on I-405 south and SR 522 west.
  • No street parking will be available within the project limits (the Downtown Fire Station at NE 185th Street to 110th Avenue NE).
  • Variable message signs will be placed at several locations north of the UW Bothell/Cascadia College campus to alert drivers. The speed limit on campus is 20 miles per hour.

Drivers headed to UW Bothell/Cascadia College should know:

  • There may be delays due to construction.
  • Drivers are encouraged to access campus through the SR 522 entrance.
  • The entrance to UW Bothell/Cascadia College at 110th Avenue NE will remain open.
  • Westbound access to Husky Village along Beardslee Blvd will remain open; however drivers are encouraged to access Husky Village via NE 185th St.
  • Access to Husky Hall will remain open via Beardslee Boulevard and eastbound NE 185th St.
  • The entrances/exits to the Village at Beardslee Crossing, including UW Bothell’s offices at Beardslee Crossing, will remain open.

Staff developed the construction plan with input from the Fire Department, transit agencies and the UW Bothell/Cascadia College. The plan will require less construction time than other options, will provide predictable traffic impacts, and will allow access for emergency responders.

The project will include:

  • Asphalt pavement overlay from Sunrise Drive to NE 185th Street.
  • Pavement reconstruction in the travel lanes from NE 185th Street to 110th Avenue NE.
  • Asphalt overlay of the parking and bike lanes from NE 185th Street to 110th Avenue NE.

The project will also replace the existing asbestos cement water main with ductile iron pipe. Replacing the water main under this project improve the water system and ensure that the new pavement will not be trenched in the near future.

The project is funded through the Safe Streets and Sidewalks levy, approved by voters in 2016.
