This morning, the Snohomish County Multiple Agency Response Team (SMART) released a significant update to their investigation of an officer-involved shooting involving Juan Rene Hummel on July 29, 2020.
On January 12, 2021, attorneys for the family of Mr. Hummel asked SMART to review surveillance video of the investigation. SMART is an independent agency that controls the investigation and the release of any information. As part of their January 12th request, the attorneys asked Chief Seuberlich and the Snohomish County Prosecutor to talk and request that SMART release the video. The video footage had not been released to the City for review.
Shortly after receiving the request, Chief Seuberlich informed SMART that his department has no objection to releasing the video to the public, provided it did not compromise SMART’s independent investigation.
We viewed these videos for the first time this morning and we know these are hard to watch, for our community and all involved. We expect to receive more information and a complete picture of all actions that occurred once the SMART team concludes its investigation and releases all associated files and information.
