April 5th, 2021 - Hello! Late last year, City Council prioritized Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and added some funds to our budget for a part-time coordinator.
As we talk with other cities and consultants, we’re learning that hiring a part-time coordinator might not be the best first step for us. We really need to develop the strategy and foundation for a sustainable DEI program. Staff is discussing if it makes more sense to use the 2021-22 funds to instead hire an experienced consultant with more depth and breadth in DEI work, who then helps us develop a plan/staff roles.
Of all of the consultants we’ve talked with, Chanin Kelly-Rae had the most applicable experience. She is working successfully with City of Redmond/Police and the City of Kirkland right now.
Before we retain anyone or move forward with a part-time staffer, I’d like to invite you to an informal meet and greet with Chanin, so you can ask her how she would work with staff and the community to develop a DEI action plan.
This meeting is not open to the broader public, but you’ve shown in interest in DEI, and/or we value your input, so please help me with this : ) Let me know if you want to attend and I’ll send you the Zoom link. I’m also happy to chat with you next week, once you’ve had a chance to discuss with others. Am trying to keep this meeting to about 20 folks or so.
