Raising of Progress Pride Flag on Wed., June 1st at 10am

Pride Month Flag Raising

Pride Month

City Council recently voted to raise the Progress Pride Flag at several city facilities on June 1st for Pride Month. We will be raising the Progress Pride Flag at City Hall on Wednesday, June 1st at 10am. Community members are invited to join this informal, yet very special moment.

Each year throughout June during Pride Month, we recognize, honor and celebrate our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual community members. Pride Month commemorates the June 1969 Stonewall riots that resulted from ongoing harassment of New York’s trans and queer community by the New York Police.

The Stonewall riots served as a catalyst for the LGBTQIA rights movement, leading to the establishment of safe places for people to express sexual orientation and gender expression without fear, and landmark changes in public policy to protect the civil rights of all peoples. Further progress is needed to ensure these protections remain for all members of the LGBTQIA community, yet we are excited to celebrate the substantial gains that have been achieved.

City Council will also be affirming their commitment to creating a safe and inclusive community with a Pride Month Proclamation during the first Council meeting of the month, on June 7th at 6pm.
