What exactly is the Comprehensive Plan and why does it matter? We’re glad you asked!
The Imagine Bothell Comprehensive Plan acts as a blueprint for the growth and development of our City for the next 20 years and beyond. It shapes how Bothell will look, feel, and operate over time, and guides everything from transportation and land use, economic development and housing, to the environment and parks.
We are performing a periodic update of the Comprehensive Plan to meet state requirements. We will be looking to you, our community, to share your thoughts about what you like, and changes you want to see. The Comprehensive Planning process was created through the state’s Growth Management Act (GMA) that passed in 1990. The overarching goal of the GMA is to manage growth and prevent sprawl, in order to contain growth and protect wilderness, agricultural, and rural areas.
The Comprehensive Plan contains a series of goals, policies, and actions that direct long range and day-to-day work for city staff, and guide elected officials in decision-making. Comprehensive Planning ensures that we have adequate facilities and infrastructure to meet future growth.
During the Comprehensive Plan periodic update, we will work closely with the community, city staff, City Council, and our Boards and Commissions to create a common set of principles and goals that guide the development of the plan and its components. Things like zoning regulations, capital projects, and street standards are also part of the update. The Comprehensive Plan is how we shape our regulations and determine what gets built throughout the city, which impacts all people who live, work, and visit Bothell.
The Comprehensive Plan Update is the best time for you to share what things you like in our community, what you want more of, and what is most important to you. We encourage you to get involved and to be part of the process!
